This professional scientific position applies the biological sciences to criminal investigations through laboratory analysis of physical evidence. Responsibilities include evidence screening, serology, DNA analysis, and scientific reporting.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in a structured training program in forensic biology through classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory work

  • Learn and apply evidence screening procedures, DNA laboratory methods, protocols, and equipment

  • Maintain knowledge of current technologies and laboratory procedures through scientific literature and training with experienced personnel

  • Perform preliminary evidence screening using serological analysis and microscopic examination

  • Conduct DNA analysis and interpretation of results

  • Prepare detailed scientific reports summarizing laboratory findings

  • Conduct technical reviews of scientific reports

  • Prepare findings for court presentation and provide expert testimony

  • Continuously work to improve laboratory operations, reduce turnaround times, and streamline processes

  • Collaborate effectively with fellow laboratory scientists and staff

Preferred Knowledge

  • Principles and analytical procedures of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and statistics

  • Current applications of forensic science

  • Laboratory instruments and equipment used in forensic evidence analysis

  • Chemical and laboratory safety procedures

  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ANAB AR 3125 Accreditation Requirements for Forensic Testing and Calibration Laboratories

  • FBI Quality Assurance Standards and CODIS policies and procedures

Required Education and Experience

Applicants must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a forensic science–related field.

Criminal justice degrees that do not include science coursework (lecture and laboratory) will not be considered forensic science-related degrees.

Preference will be given to applicants with advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD). However, candidates with a bachelor’s degree may be considered based on academic performance and relevant forensic DNA laboratory experience.

Applicants with two or more years of relevant experience as a qualified DNA analyst may be eligible for the DNA Analyst I position, provided they possess a baccalaureate degree in biology, chemistry, or a forensic science-related field.

All applicants must have successfully completed undergraduate or graduate coursework in the following areas:

  • Biochemistry

  • Genetics

  • Molecular Biology

  • Statistics and/or Population Genetics
