About the Position

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory is seeking a Firearm and Tool Mark Examiner to join our forensic science team. Experience is preferred but not required. This role involves the scientific examination and comparison of firearms-related evidence, including bullets, cartridge cases, and other ammunition components.

Examiners determine whether evidence was fired from a specific firearm and may also perform tests to determine caliber, rifling characteristics, firearm functionality, and the restoration of obliterated serial numbers.

Applicants without experience must be willing to complete a year-long training program with an independent provider, including approximately six months of out-of-state onsite instruction (if accepted into the program).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (natural science degree preferred)

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

  • Must pass a visual acuity test

  • Trainees must complete an approved training program and pass a competency test

  • Trained analysts must pass periodic proficiency tests

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Examine and compare bullets, cartridge cases, and other ammunition components

  • Perform caliber and rifling characteristics determinations

  • Test firearm function and safety

  • Restore obliterated serial numbers

  • Test-fire firearms and download ammunition

  • Enter and correlate cases into the IBIS system

  • Collect and/or transport evidence

  • Prepare reports and visual aids suitable for court presentation

  • Testify in court as an expert witness

  • Respond to and assist with processing crime scenes

  • Work under the supervision of a senior forensic scientist or supervisor

  • Communicate effectively with both scientific and non-scientific personnel

  • Operate laboratory equipment and motor vehicles

  • Safely handle biological and chemical hazards

  • Follow QA/QC requirements and laboratory procedural manuals

  • Adhere to all established policies and procedures
