Position Overview
The Latent Print Examiner is a forensic analyst responsible for developing, documenting, and preserving latent friction ridge impressions and conducting complex comparisons using the ACE-V methodology.
The role includes extensive laboratory processing utilizing chemical, physical, and digital techniques, along with early-stage evidence handling to support additional forensic disciplines while upholding accreditation standards. Examiners prepare scientifically defensible reports, perform technical reviews, and provide expert testimony.
Additional duties include 24/7 on-call availability, operation of AFIS and NGI databases, annual internal and external proficiency testing, and collecting inked exemplars from living or deceased individuals when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in natural science, forensic science, or a closely related field

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand scientific and technical literature

Strong analytical, observational, and documentation skills

Knowledge of scientific laboratory methods, equipment, processes, and procedures

Trainees must successfully complete the JPSO Crime Laboratory Latent Print Processing and Comparison Training Program

Trained analysts must satisfactorily complete initial competency and annual proficiency tests

Successful completion of the Louisiana State Police AFIS User Requirements Competency
-
Ability to pass a visual acuity test
-
Willingness to attend out-of-state training and/or conferences
-
Availability for remote verifications during a declared emergency or special event
-
Valid driver’s license and U.S. citizenship; must be at least 21 years of age

Ability to lift and carry at least 45 pounds

Adequate hand-eye coordination, including the ability to grip with fingers and hands

Preferred Qualifications

Training or coursework in friction ridge development, forensic chemistry, or crime scene processing
-
Knowledge of alternate light source equipment and photography techniques
-
Familiarity with AFIS/NGI workflows
-
Completion of specialized training (IAI courses, forensic workshops, conferences)
-
Experience working in an accredited forensic laboratory

IAI Certified Latent Print Examiner (CLPE) Certification
Key Responsibilities
May include, but are not limited to:

Evaluate evidence to determine appropriate processing sequences based on matrix/substrate, condition, and investigative needs
-
Perform latent print development techniques, including physical, chemical, and optical methods (e.g., cyanoacrylate fuming, dye staining, ninhydrin, alternate light source)

Operate specialized laboratory equipment such as fuming chambers, vent hoods, ALS/forensic laser systems, and digital imaging tools
-
Document all processing steps, observations, and results in accordance with laboratory procedures

Capture high-quality digital images of developed impressions using forensic imaging systems
-
Assist with validation studies, equipment maintenance, and procedure updates
-
Provide technical guidance to investigators and crime scene personnel regarding evidence packaging, preservation, and processing

Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols, including proper handling of chemicals, biological materials, and hazardous equipment

Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory workspace
-
Examine and compare latent and inked prints using the ACE-V methodology

Document analytical processes, prepare scientific reports and visual aids, and provide expert testimony in various courts of law
-
Utilize digital imaging software to enhance, annotate, and preserve friction ridge detail
-
Operate applications within the AFIS/NGI systems

Conduct technical reviews and participate in internal audits

Communicate technical information clearly to investigators, attorneys, and other stakeholders
-
Adapt to fluctuating case demands and provide rapid turnaround for exigent requests

Collect inked prints from suspected criminals, victims, or deceased persons
-
Work under the direct supervision of a senior forensic analyst or supervisor

Provide training and/or presentations to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and citizens
