The Personnel Division is accepting applications for the Evidence Technician position assigned to the Crime Laboratory – Evidence Section.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Evidence Technician is responsible for maintaining the integrity, security, and chain of custody of hazardous and non-hazardous evidence and property received from Sheriff’s Office personnel and outside agencies. Duties include receiving, documenting, and entering evidence into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); accurately recording the condition of items; and ensuring their secure storage within the laboratory. The Evidence Technician also releases and tracks evidence for laboratory examinations, court proceedings, and other authorized purposes, while maintaining complete documentation of all transactions. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the lawful release, return, and disposal of adjudicated evidence and property in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and legal requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); college coursework in science and/or law enforcement preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be computer proficient and able to learn and operate a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts.

Functions and Skills
May include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive, review, catalog, label, package, document, store, and release property and evidence while maintaining chain-of-custody integrity.
  • Assign and distribute casework to technicians and analysts based on workload.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, transportation, and legal disposal of hazardous and evidentiary materials.
  • Operate and maintain the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and ensure compliance with laboratory evidence submission procedures.
  • Respond to and assist with crime scene processing, evidence collection, and transportation.
  • Testify in court and work under the direct supervision of a forensic scientist or supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with scientific and non-scientific personnel.
  • Operate motor vehicles and standard office equipment.
  • Safely handle biological and chemical hazards while complying with QA/QC requirements, laboratory policies, and established procedures.
  • Attend specialized training, including extended out-of-state assignments, as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical agility and strength sufficient to perform essential job functions, including running, walking, climbing, crawling, bending, reaching, pulling, twisting, and restraining combative individuals.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 45 pounds.
  • Adequate hand-eye coordination and grip strength for safe and effective job performance.
  • Clear vision and the ability to effectively hear and communicate verbally.
